Is open and staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week to handle people of different ages presenting to the hospital with a mix of injuries and illnesses. The emergency department is not a first-come-first-serve clinic. The triage nurse you first meet when you come into the emergency department is specially trained to pick up on clues that might make your condition more time-sensitive and prioritize your care by the severity of your illness. This ensures that we manage all emergencies in a timely manner.​ 
The emergency department is staffed by highly specialized emergency nurses and doctors whose role is to assess the patient, perform the required emergency investigations and provide the patient with the necessary immediate life-saving treatment before they get admitted for more definitive care.
The emergency department is interconnected with a much larger web of people and services right around the whole hospital and sometimes beyond.
